This is one of the most famous tourist and religious landmarks in the capital. Located on the summit of the Cerro San Cristóbal, it was inaugurated on April 26, 1908 during an Easter celebration presided over by Father Clovis Montero to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Proclamation of the Dogma of the Immaculate Conception.

This shrine belongs to the Vicariate of Santiago and the statue is a replica of the “Virgin of Rome” by Italian sculptor Giuseppe Obici, although this Virgin stands upon a crescent moon instead of a full moon. The shrine draws huge crowds on December 8, the Feast of the Immaculate Conception.
