Architecture with identity: Luciano Kulczewski's stamp on Cerro San Cristóbal
The Castillo Pío Nono was designed by the renowned Chilean architect Luciano Kulczewski, one of the most influential figures in Chilean architecture during the first half of the 20th century and the author of numerous iconic buildings in Santiago. Besides the Funicular's entrance, he also took part in designing other spaces within Parque Metropolitano, such as the former Casino Cumbre and the Casa de las Arañas.
True to his style, Kulczewski created a building that blends neo-medieval, Gothic and Art Nouveau influences, achieving a unique work that, more than a century later, remains one of the most recognizable buildings on Cerro San Cristóbal.
Its distinctive silhouette resembles a small European castle thanks to elements such as:
- The medieval tower crowning the main façade.
- Walls built with hewn stone extracted from Cerro San Cristóbal itself.
- Large entrance arches.
- Battlements and decorative details inspired by medieval fortresses.
Beyond its aesthetic value, the Castillo Pío Nono was conceived as a true gateway into Parque Metropolitano.
